The Arizona Cardinals do have some need at the cornerback position this offseason. Jerraud Powers is a free agent. That leaves the Cardinals with only Patrick Peterson and Justin Bethel with any game experience with the team. head coach Bruce Arians has said he wants to add length and speed to the position. One would imagine they will probably draft one.
Since that is a possibility, let's look at who the top corners are, according to NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock.
1. Jalen Ramsey, Florida State
2. Vernon Hargreaves, Florida
3. Mackensie Alexander, Clemson
4. Eli Apple, Ohio State
5. Cyrus Jones, Alabama
Ramsey is seen as on of the top players overall in the draft. He will be selected early in the first round. In fact, in mock drafts I have seen, as many as four of these players are gone before the Arizona Cardinals pick at number 29.
Ohio State's Apple has the length the Cardinals want at 6-1, but he is not seen as athletic as others at the position. Ramsey also is 6-1, but the other three are 5-11 or 5-10.
The height will not necessarily preclude the Cardinals from looking at them, but the team and the league is trending toward taller corners to match up with the bigger receivers in the league.
Are any of these five corners guys you would want the Cardinals to pick? More realistically, would you be willing to see the Cardinals take a guy like Apple or one like Jones, even if it means in the first round?
