A previously popular young quarterback name is now available. The Tennessee Titans waived quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Monday, ending his career there after two seasons. Because he is not a vested veteran, he is subject to the waiver system. Another team could claim him off waivers. If he clears waivers, he would be a free agent and could sign with the team of his choice.
Mettenberger, out of LSU, is 6-5 and 224 pounds. He has a big arm. He was drafted by the Titans in the sixth round in 2014. He appeared in 14 games in two years, started 10 of them at quarterback for Tennessee. he has yet to win a game as a starter.
He has completed 60 percent of his 345 career passes for almost 2400 yards, 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He has a career passer rating of 75.4.
There was some buzz around Mettenberger when he came out in the draft as a guy who could be the guy for the Arizona Cardinals to groom, considering his size and arm strength. However, amid off-the-field whispers, a knee injury and a slow delivery, he fell to the sixth round.
Arizona has two developmental QBs on the roster currently in Matt Barkley and Jake Coker. The presumption is they will battle for the third QB spot on the roster.
Arizona was considered a good landing place for Mettenberger coming out of the draft in 2014. The team brought him in as one of their pre-draft visits.
He has some starting experience and has had a bit of success, especially comparing him to Barkley. Barkley has not started a game in three years. He has appeared in four games and has thrown four interceptions without a touchdown.
Is he worth a waiver claim? They could cut Coker and let Mettenberger and Barkley battle it out for the last QB spot on the roster.
