Niners week Chats: San Francisco 49ers won’t play Jimmy Garoppolo in game against Arizona Cardinals

Talking with David Fucillo of Niners Nation to get ready for the Cardinals and Niners game.

The Arizona Cardinals take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Santa Clara, California.

David Fucillo of Niners Nation was kind enough to talk about the Niners and the big trade, the injuries on defense and what the fans think of this season.

We’ll share that over the next couple of days, but here is the first part.

The San Francisco 49ers made the move and now... Are playing coy about Jimmy Garoppolo. Do you buy this "He may not play" thing or are they just trying to gain an advantage of making at least one team prepare for two QB's?

Fooch: On Wednesday, Kyle Shanahan said, "I can’t promise you guys that he won’t play this week. I can’t promise you guys that he’ll play this year." I'm willing to bet it's mostly just coach-speak. Of course, in light of the news that Pierre Garçon joined the team's growing list of players on injured reserve, maybe it's worth just stashing Jimmy Garoppolo until the offseason. I'm not entirely serious about that, but the more players get injured, well, the more maybe it makes at least a little sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shanahan wanted to keep the Cardinals guessing, but I don't think he's overly concerned about that. I don't doubt Bruce Arians when he says he is preparing for both quarterbacks, but I doubt he is spending a ton of time on Garoppolo. It is worth noting that Shanahan said Garoppolo will be active on Sunday. The 49ers have rookie QB Nick Mullens on their practice squad, but it seems unlikely he is activated. If QB C.J. Beathard gets hurt, we'll see Garoppolo, but otherwise, he'll be carrying a clipboard all day.
