It is not a surprise, but the Arizona Cardinals will not be able to just wait out Tony Jefferson when the 2017 NFL free agency begins.
After giving Jefferson the lowest tender as a restricted free agent, something many believed was a mistake, the Arizona Cardinals retained the restricted free agent safety for a bargain.
Well, after being named one of the 101 best players in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus, the rumors that Tony Jefferson will be a commodity in free agency this time around has started.
From CBS Sports Jason La Canfora:
Would the Ravens add a top notch safety two years in a row? Keep an eye on Arizona strong safety Tony Jefferson, who is going to do quite well next month.
Baltimore wouldn’t mind pairing him with Eric Weddle, a savvy signing a year ago, in 2017 (if they were able to do that, would spell the end of long-time favorite Lardarius Webb, whose release could free up $5.5 million in cap savings). The Ravens are also continuing efforts to retain run-stuffing stalwart Brandon Williams on their defensive line, sources said.
Can the Arizona Cardinals afford to get into a bidding war for the services of Jefferson in 2017? Likely not.
Would he take less to stay in Arizona? Maybe, but I wouldn’t expect him too.
What do you think?
