In case you hadn't heard, Larry Fitzgerald is coming back for another run (perhaps his last, this time?) at the ever fleeting Super Bowl ring. Jim Trotter of ESPN was the first to notify the world of Fitz's impending return to the Arizona Cardinals, noting that the wideout will play out the final year of his contract.
So assuming Carson Palmer returns as well, which would seem like a foregone conclusion at this point, the Cards will have the band back together for another year. But what does that change for general manager Steve Keim and the rest of the front office? Well, to be frank, it shouldn't change anything whatsoever.
With Fitz back in the fold, Arizona may not have to reach for a wide receiver at the top of the draft, but that is still a hole they will need to address. Keim now has a little flexibility in that he can wait until a later round to draft a receiver and give him a year to develop while under the tutelage of Fitz, Jaron Brown, John Brown and J.J. Nelson. Then again, Keim could take someone like Mike Williams from Clemson at #13 and get a more polished receiver that could help them in a playoff run this season. Again, Fitz's return provides a lot more options.
But no matter which way you look at it, the Cards still have to look towards the future and draft or sign a free agent wide receiver with a body type similar to Fitzgerald's. The team would likely not benefit from John Brown and J.J. Nelson, their only two wide receivers under contract beyond 2017, as their two starting wide receivers. That isn't to say that they aren't talented players, but they bring similar skillsets and aren't the typical possession receivers that every team needs.
What do you think Arizona Cardinals fans? What does Fitzgerald's return change for you?
