One of the reports floating around now is about how happy the Arizona Cardinals are with their running back depth.
Whether that is true or not, we won't find out until August, I'm guessing, but it made for some interesting chatter.
There seems to be an idea that the Cardinals need a backup like David Johnson. Hell, the Cardinals brass talked about it before free agency and the draft.
The issue is, there's not really a player who does what Johnson does for the Cardinals, outside of that guy in Pittsburgh and the one in Dallas.
Sure, maybe they could have been the team that took on Joe Mixon, but that was too high a price for a player that wouldn't have played much barring injury and… well the other stuff.
If you look at the Steelers, they never put the burden of replacing Le’Veon Bell on DeAngelo Williams. They used a similar running game, but didn't worry as much about throwing to the back.
That has to be the Cardinals idea. You can replace a running back, you can't replace an offensive weapon like Johnson.
David Johnson is the Cardinals offense when he's on the field. He is the one player that has to be accounted for by the defense on every play.
Don't try and find someone else that can do that. Just find someone that can keep the offense on time and humming.
Now, if that player is on the roster, well that may be a whole other story.
