The Cardinals opened their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. In the process, they churned the bottom of the roster once again. The team brought back wide receiver Chris Hubert, who spent last season with the Cardinals.
Hubert earned the title “Little Smoke”, due to their similar stature and measurables. The Cardinals released him prior to rookie minicamp earlier this offseason. He had spent three weeks on the active roster last season, being promoted off the practice squad in late October.
The team also released Mikey Bart, a rookie out of North Carolina. Bart was signed in early May to replace Collin Blevins who left the squad.
With a number of open spots on the teams’ 90 man roster, the Cardinals made two more roster changes
Undrafted free agent corner Daniel Gray was brought back. Gray was a tryout player during the Cardinals’ rookie minicamp. Gray played at Utah State, starting 19 of 27 possible games. He recorded 87 tackles, one interception, and five passes defended. Gray is the cousin of quarterbacks coach, Byron Leftwich.
The Cardinals went out and added Alex Bazzie. Bazzie has spent time on the three NFL rosters, starting with Carolina, moving to Indianapolis, and now Arizona. He played as a defensive tackle in the CFL, recording 29 sacks in 50 career games. The 26-year-old played his college ball at Marshall. Bazzie has been working as a linebacker in the NFL.
None of these guys will be more than camp bodies. Hubert has a lot of ground to cover, and with a deep receiver room, his chances to make the practice squad again this season is slim. Gray enters a weak secondary, but there is not much to form an opinion on him, because of his lack of statistics. Bazzie could have a shot considering the outside linebackers are slim for depth, but again, he has a lot of ground to cover.
