With the Steelers being eliminated from the playoffs this past weekend, much of the Cardinals head coach talk has shifted to the team being able to interview Mike Munchak a second time for their vacant coaching spot. Still, the Cardinals are going to line up second interviews with other personnel around the league even if their team is still in the running.
One of those people is John DeFilippo of the Philadelphia Eagles, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN (via Rotoworld). The current Eagles QB coach is still helping to teach up Nick Foles in their preparation for the NFC Championship game against the Minnesota Vikings, so he won’t be able to interview until the Eagles are either eliminated or win the Super Bowl.
Again, having these interviews lined up beforehand is important. Just because they can now interview Munchak for a second time doesn’t mean they will want to hire him right away or that he will even be in the running after the second interview. Pat Shurmur of the Vikings is another guy they would probably like to bring in for a second time, although he is expected to take the New York Giants head coaching job.
DeFilippo is an incredibly talented offensive mind that would ideally be able to come to the desert and work with a young quarterback that the team drafts this year. They can always sign a stopgap in the meantime, but letting the young new head coach work with the young new quarterback could pay dividends in the future.
