As the Arizona Cardinals try to find the right combination of players for the 2018 season, they do so in interesting ways each week.
This week, they placed offensive lineman Justin Pugh on injured reserve, while also cutting safety Eddie Pleasant.
Then, last night we found out the team was signing cornerback David Amerson to fill one of those two spots.
Now, the team officially announced the signing of Amerson, but also cornerback Leonard Johnson to the team.
From the Cardinals:
Amerson (6-1, 205) is a five-year NFL veteran who has played in 68 games (56 starts) with the Redskins (2013-15) and Raiders (2015-17) in his career and has 249 tackles (215 solo), eight interceptions, 63 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He entered the league with the Redskins as a second-round selection (51st overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of North Carolina State. The 26-year old Amerson played in six games with the Raiders last season and spent the offseason with Kansas City until he was released on September 1.
Johnson (5-10, 194) has played in 77 games (27 starts) in his NFL career and has 231 tackles (176 solo), five interceptions, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 11 special teams tackles. The six-year veteran has played with Tampa Bay (2012-14), New England (2015), Carolina (2016) and Buffalo (2017) in his NFL career after entering the league with the Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012 out of Iowa State. The 28-year old Johnson played in 15 games (seven starts) last season with Buffalo and spent the preseason with the Giants until being released on September 1.
This obviously begs the question... Why two defensive backs, specifically corners?
Is there more to the Budda Baker injury front than we are being let on? Is Tre Boston hurting again?
We should find out more on today’s injury report, but something is amiss.
UPDATE:
The Arizona Cardinals list of non-participants in the open portion of practice is long and distinguished... Also could explain signing two cornerbacks.
Not practicing in open portion for Cardinals: Baker, Nkemdiche, Iupati, Ford, C. Williams, Humphries. Injury report this afternoon
