The final two games are irrelevant to the Arizona Cardinals.
Not because they won’t try, the players will be uninterested, or because they are unlikely to win. It won’t be irrelevant because they are likely going to pick first in the 2019 NFL Draft unless they find a way to pull off a monumental upset over the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks.
No, the irrelevance comes from the fact that so few players will be on the roster for the Cardinals in 2019, so what actually transpires has little to do with moving forward.
The team will be turning over a huge amount of their roster, not only because they should, but because a number of players are simply free agents at the end of this year.
However, there are some players that should provide some intrigue the final couple of games, here they are.
Rodney Gunter - The Cardinals allegedly want Gunter back, it would be big for the Cardinals to have Gunter back as well, since they are likely to have no players remaining from the 2013 or 2014 drafts left on the roster after this offseason.
Gunter, a 2015 4th round pick, has never lived up to his stellar rookie season, but he has become an important part of the Cardinals defensive line rotation, as well as possessing two important things: Health and youth.
Benson Mayowa and Markus Golden - Here is the rub, both are 28 next year, both look like rotational players right now, and Mayowa has clearly outplayed Golden this year.
The question becomes does Golden show enough to convince the Cardinals he can be a starter again, or do they take the player that is playing at a higher level in his current role?
Gerald Hodges - While Jeremy Cash comes back from an ACL tear and is also a free agent, Hodges has proven to be one thing this team has needed as a backup linebacker and spot starter... Available and solid. He’s not a guy you want starting for half the season, but he has been a steady influence next to Haason Reddick when they need him.
Zach Moore - Another defensive lineman, who has done a nice job in limited time. He’s more of a deep rotational guy, but he has played on the edge and the interior and something like that is big when it comes to keeping depth and health available.
Other soon to be free agents like J.J. Nelson and Deone Bucannon seemed destined to be on new teams in 2019, while others like Tre Boston seem like safe bets the team would like back at the right cost.
What veteran free agents are you watching the final two games?
