With the news that Adrian Peterson is likely to be cut soon by the Arizona Cardinals, the question becomes, was the trade worth it?
The Cardinals did not give up much in the way of compensation, a sixth round pick, but they only got six games, 448 yards and two touchdowns out of Adrian Peterson
Moreover, they stifled the potential growth of Kerwynn Williams and Elijhaa Penny, both who performed better than Peterson on the season.
Peterson wasn’t the problem, he’s a power running back who needs a split second to work. His upright, patient running style is a trademark, but it doesn’t exactly work when paired with a porous offensive line and no quarterback talent.
Yet, when the Cardinals went to Williams, Penny and at times D.J. Foster as their backfield, things were better.
This isn’t a shot at Peterson, a likely Hall of Fame running back, but it is to say his particular set of skills wasn’t a fit with what the Cardinals needed.
However, we will always have and remember the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game where he turned back the clock one last time.
