The Arizona Cardinals are all in on creating as much cap space as possible heading into the 2019 offseason... Which mean dumping recently signed players and key veterans if need be.
Today, the team announced that they have released veteran safety Antoine Bethea ($4.75 million saved) and veteran backup quarterback Mike Glennon ($1 million saved).
The Cardinals with both moves will have about $43.7 million in free agency.
With the expected trade of Marcus Gilbert to be completed when the new league year starts, well their cap will be back down to about $39.7 million.
The cap has been an issue for Steve Keim since he took over, and the $8 million in dead money he is paying Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon is part of a larger reason as to why the Cardinals have struggled over the last three seasons.
That $8 million would be great to use to sign a younger defensive linemen or offensive linemen, but it is what it is at this point.
At least they’ll be right around $40 million when free agency kicks off next week.
Good luck to Bethea and Glennon on their next stops in their careers.
