With the announcement that roster sizes going into training camp are down from 90 to 80 that puts late-round draft picks and undrafted free agents on the bubble.
Updates from NFLPA call with players tonight:
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) July 21, 2020
- No preseason games in 2020
- Union still pushing for longer ramp-up period in camp
- Roster sizes expected to be 80 to start camp
- General agreement on voluntary and high-risk opt-out
- General agreement on stipend if games lost
When you combine that with no preseason games, all of a sudden there are players who just are not as necessary on the roster in 2020.
Here are seven Arizona Cardinals players in danger with the roster limit changes.
Drew Anderson, QB
Anderson would have had a great chance this year to show what a year growing in the system looked like. Instead, he has to be a practice arm as the third/fourth quarterback on a roster with Brett Hundley and newly signed Chris Streveler.
Jake Benzinger, OL
Benzinger is one of the classic offensive linemen that get a bunch of time in game one and game four of the preseason to show whether or not they can play.
Trevon Coley, DT
The Arizona Cardinals have invested heavily along the defensive line, can’t imagine you see too many defensive linemen without preseason getting the reps necessary to show enough.
Adam Shuler, DE
Shuler is an undersized edge rusher who doesn’t show a ton of athleticism from the edge. Not sure he is the type that shows it in practice.
Jonathan Ward, RB
Again, running backs are going to be hit hard on this. No unnecessary carries in the preseason, which means no chance for Ward to show what he can do.
JoJo Ward, WR
Ward is a really nice player, but as an undersized wide receiver who will be dealing with camp battles instead of getting to show out in the preseason he could struggle to find a spot.
Ryan Winslow, P
Winslow is the extra leg on the roster. Probably don’t need that this year.
