Rodney Hudson restructures contract, freeing up cap space for Arizona Cardinals

The ol’ kick the can down the road is in full effect for the Arizona Cardinals.

While perusing Over the Cap, John Venerable found the Cardinals now have more money in cap space.

Doing more digging and the Cardinals restructured Rodney Hudson’s contract and he now only has a cap hit of $2.8 million for the 2021 season.

When you look at the contract, the Cardinals added an extra voided year onto the end, meaning that he is under contract in 2022 and now 2023, but that 2023 year is voidable and not real. They just added more money throughout the contract all the way to 2025 as an extra voided year where money just sits.

This makes sense for a couple of reasons.

  1. The Cardinals still have some work to do in free agency.
  2. Hudson wants to win, so he likely doesn’t want to sign an extension in Arizona where we all believe they are building a winner, until he sees some proof.
  3. If the Cardinals are winning, it makes an extension easy.

No matter how you slice it, the Cardinals now have $15.1 million in cap space remaining.

So, who is next to sign?
