In my series of articles, I picked some draft picks correctly, and some wrong. Just like every one else. Let’s hit the instant replay and see where I eat crow.

In my series of articles, I picked some draft picks correctly, and some wrong. Just like every one else. Let's hit the instant replay and see where I eat crow.

Linebackers:

I said I’d like to see an inside linebacker selected. And my wish came true; Kevin Minter of LSU was selected! A few undrafted free agent LBs were signed, also. I also wished for ex-Card and ex-Dolphin Karlos Dansby to return to the nest. May not see that wish come true…

Cornerbacks:

I correctly called it that Dee Milliner would be available at the #7 pick. However, Milliner was bypassed for Jonathan Cooper, who we needed more than Milliner. A win-win in anyone’s book, really!

Safeties:

I called for a safety to be drafted, and Tyrann Mathieu was selected. He didn’t play that position in college regularly, but the Cards think he can potentially replace Adrian Wilson as the hard-hitting, playmaking defender every team needs. The team also signed a pair of <state>Oklahoma</state> safeties.

Defensive Ends:

I called for a defensive lineman to be taken somewhere in the draft, and <state>Texas</state>’ Alex Okafor was there at the right time. I also thought that Nick Eason would make a quality depth backup. However, the Cards signed some undrafted free agents instead. However, Okafor is being groomed to play outside linebacker.

Nose Tackle:

I called for one to be taken late in the draft, but was stiffed.

Quarterbacks:

I thought that our "QB room" was pretty solid, but called for one to be taken in the third round if we really needed one. We didn’t, so we didn’t.

Punter:

I called for NO punter to be drafted, and we didn’t. Instead, the team signed a free agent instead. Still a win for me.

Kicker:

No draft pick was expended here, as I recommended. Another win!

Punt/Kickoff Returner:

No draft pick was used to get a returner, solely to return kicks. However, I foresee a Dynamic Duo of Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu used at strategic and timely points in games. Should be fun to watch! Don’t go to the fridge for a beer if this happens!

Long Snapper:

None were drafted. A free agent was brought in.

Wide Receivers:

I called for no draft pick of a wide receiver this year, since we are well stocked at this position. However, the front office did not agree, and picked Ryan Swope. He supposedly runs disciplined routes, and is a speed burner. However, he has concussion worries. The team also signed several WRs as undrafted free agents.

Tight Ends:

I called for a TE to not be picked, since the top rated ones would most likely be taken by the time the team got around to finding one. Well, they found one in the seventh round, DC Jefferson. He will probably be beat out by Jim Dray, so this was a wasted pick, in my opinion.

Running Back:

I nailed this one! The Cards picked my pick, Andre Ellington. And also picked up Stepfan Taylor, to boot. I cautioned against Marcus Lattimore, because of injury concerns. So, our good frenemies the 49ers took him.

Fullback:

I wasn’t in favor of drafting one, and the team did not. They signed one as an undrafted free agent.

Center:

I stressed experience over youth here. We didn’t really need one; someone among the plethora of offensive linemen the team has signed lately can fill in if needed. The team didn’t pick one in the draft.

Guard:

Well, I definitely nailed this one! I called for the team to pick a guard at #7, which they did. Only I picked the wrong one, Chance Warmack. The team instead picked Jonathan Cooper. I also was in favor of another guard picked later in the draft. And the team picked Earl Warford. Double score here.

Tackle:

I called for the team to take a tackle if one of the top three were available at #7. Well, they went <date year="2004" day="2" month="1">1-2-4</date>, leaving the door open to pick Cooper. Score here, since I liked Warmack…

I think I did better here than many pro pickers across the country. You may disagree. It’s your constitutional right to do so. So, ROTB Best and Brightest, what say you?

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Last of a series finding out which players on the street would look good in a Cardinals' uniform.

Last in my AGM series for now (there’s ALWAYS a subject to debate in the NFL). Today, the Cards signed four camp bodies; only one has a realistic shot at making the team as depth: Paul Fanaika, a reserve tackle from <city>Seattle</city>.

Back to the remaining free agents.

Linebackers

There are a whopping total of 54 linebackers available on the street! Three of them are old friends: Paris Lenon, Clark Haggans and Karlos Dansby. Brian Urlacher, a virtual lock for the Hall of Fame after his stellar career with the Bears, is inexplicably unemployed. It’s telling that some of these guys are good players, yet they are not signed yet, even by their own teams. I believe that most of these guys will find a home at the start of training camp. After the draft, teams will begin filling out their camp rosters. The AGM would like to see an ILB drafted. If Dansby was willing, he’d look good on this new defense.

Cornerbacks

There are 36 corners on the street as of this writing. No one too notable is out there: maybe Quentin Jammer, but he was nicknamed "The Toast" during his last season, because he got burned regularly. He was available along with Antoine Cason when the Cards went looking for cornerback help. I think the real GM made the right call. The draft is full of talent at cornerback. If Dee Milliner falls to the Cards at #7, do we grab him? The AGM says, "damn skippy we do!" Best Player Available scenario! With Milliner and Peterson at the corners, opposing QBs will have to take more time to find open targets, thus giving the LBs precious extra seconds to make a sack. This is what’s known as a ‘win-win’ situation.

Safeties

There are currently 33 safeties on the street. Three are old friends: Michael Adams, James Sanders and Kerry Rhodes.
<place>Rhodes</place> would be a good fit back with his old team; perhaps some more time being unemployed will water down his salary demands, and his pride. James Sanders played well for us; maybe he will get a call just before training camp. As for Michael Adams, there is a growing chorus of fans who think we can find a better player to take his place on the roster. Certainly we can find a taller one! But, it is not all about height; it is about heart, and Michael Adams has that, hands down. Ronde Barber is available; but it is obvious he wants to stay in <city>Tampa</city>, and that the team is putting him off until after the draft, at least. Charles Woodson would look good as a Cardinal, too. But there are concerns about his injuries, and salary demands.

Unfortunately for these free agents, the draft is filled with quality safeties. They will play for cheaper than many of the free agents, so market pressure will force most of the free agents to lower their salary demands, play on a one year contract, and see if the market gets better next season. The AGM would draft a safety in the middle rounds of the draft, and load up on undrafted free agents after the draft. Let camp separate the wheat from the chaff.

Well, I’ve covered all the positions. I’ve had my say. What say you, ROTB Best and Brightest?

There are only 13 players and coaches in the Ring of Honor. Surely we can find at least that many to be inducted into the Ring of DisHhonor.

I recently asked, "Who should be in the Ring of Honor?" There was a good turnout for that question. Now I ask, "Who should be in the Arizona Cardinals’ Hall of Shame?" I am taking nominations for those players who, in retrospect, the Cardinals should never have drafted, or signed. Name those players who dogged it after getting paid the big bucks (like LB Cody Brown). Name someone who quit on their teammates (like QB Timm Rosenbach?). Name someone who jetted out of town like a booster rocket the moment they were eligible to become a free agent ( S Antrel Rolle, or LB Karlos Dansby?). I’m sure there are others you can remember. Don’t just name a player. Tell me why a player belongs on the list. Build a case. Here are a few nominees that I can think of…

QB Timm Rosenbach

In retrospect, perhaps I’m being too harsh on Rosenbach. He was a Supplemental first round draft pick (number two overall) in 1989 (Pro Football Reference). He was the Kevin Kolb of his day. And I mean the sack-magnet Kolb. He was sacked 43 times in 1990, which was second in the league that year. Rosenbach got hit so many times, and received very little help from his sieve-like OL (tackles Luis Sharpe and Tootie Robbins, guards Derek Kennard and Lance Smith, and center Bill Lewis), that he just couldn’t take it anymore. It just looked bad when, a year after quitting the NFL, he took up bull riding. Really? The bulls couldn’t possibly do much more damage than a 300 lb defensive tackle, right?

<place>S Antrel</place> Rolle

Rolle was/is a heck of a good player, and is still playing well for the NY Giants. The Cards drafted him at number eight overall in the 2005 Draft. However, things seemingly soured during the last year he played in <state>Arizona</state>. When the 2009 season ended, he quickly signed with the highest bidder, and reportedly didn’t even give the home team a chance to counteroffer. It all worked out, though. The team traded for Kerry Rhodes, who wasn’t wanted by the Jets. And we know how well that trade worked out for the Cardinals.

TE Leonard Pope

Pope was the number two rated TE in the 2006 Draft, right after Vernon Davis of the 49ers. He was a third round pick of the Cards. Pope could catch, but he couldn’t block worth a damn. Reportedly, he just couldn’t learn how to get his pads down low, and keep them there. Pope was a 10,000 RPM turnstile directly to the QB. Pope was probably the reason that Matt Leinart developed a facial tic that hindered his downfield vision whenever Pope lined up. The Cardinals allowed him to leave in free agency, where he signed with KC. He’s still playing, last year with the Steelers. Too bad he learned something after he left the Cardinals.

WR Early Doucet

Early Joseph Doucet III was a highly rated receiver out of LSU in 2008 when the Cards drafted him in the third round. Fans and coaches alike had high hopes that Doucet would pair with Larry Fitzgerald and become a devastating, one-two punch in the vertical passing game. For a while, that mindset looked good. His numbers steadily increased each season, and he had a record year in 2011 (54 receptions, 689 yards, 12.8 yards per reception, and five TDs). Then came 2012. His production fell in half. But most memorably, Doucet sealed his fate in the second-to-last game versus the Bengals, when he dropped a wide open, nearly perfectly thrown pass from John Skelton (there’s two words you rarely hear mentioned in the same breath; Skelton and a perfectly thrown pass), with no defender within 10 YARDS, for a TD. A TD that the Cards desperately needed to win that game, and keep their wild card playoff hopes alive. It is telling that, since he was let go as a free agent, there have been no reports (that I have seen) of him being looked at by any other NFL club. If Leonard Pope can still be viewed as salvageable, Doucet will get another chance somewhere.

I’ve had my say. What say you, ROTB Best and Brightest?

With Larry Centers lobbying in a way to be honored by the Cardinals, we ask, "Who else?"

Who should be in the Arizona Cardinals Ring of Honor?

There are SO many worthy players, and so much information out there for each one, that it is difficult to know where to start. I enjoy doing research, but the information overload here is worthy of a Cray supercomputer. So, an arbitrary starting point should be within the collective memories of the living fan base. I chose to start my search in 1973. This was the beginning of the ‘Air Coryell' years. It also was the time that the Cardinals became nationally relevant, because of the high-octane offense led by QB Jim Hart, and many nationally televised games versus their NFC East foes. 1973 showcased some worthy names on both sides of the ball from the past, like Conrad Dobler, who, with his linemate Dan Dierdorf, were legitimate threats to tick off the defense so badly that you'd start a fight with them, and get thrown out of the game for your trouble. Also, Mel Gray, a really tough possession receiver, and Jim Bakken, a reliable and trusty kicker. But, I have to start somewhere, so 1973 it is!

The most vivid memory I have from that time (I admit I can't remember which game, in which season, and if it were a MNF game or not...) is the ‘phantom' TD (if you were a Redskins fan) scored by Terry Metcalf in the game versus the Redskins. Metcalf's dive over the top of the pile on the goal line, with the game on the line, and the Redskins' determined defense meeting him en masse up top, was an exciting, defining moment in Cardinals' history. I believe that, after the refs clarified the ‘crossing the "plane" of the goal line', there was a national discussion about the play for several days after, and may have led to an offseason refinement of the rule. If I'm off on any points here, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Most current Cards fans were not even born at the time of this game, so if you want to see what the Cardinals looked like in their glory years, when they were relevant nationally, and seemingly had a hand in determining who from the NFC East was going to the Super Bowl every year, find this game and watch it. I guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat at the end, butt clenched with anticipation when Metcalf takes the handoff from Jim Hart and launches toward the goal line.

Let's start with the most egregious omission (in my humble opinion) from the ROH, besides Centers; Jim Hart. This man is the most successful and prolific QB this team has ever seen (yes, Neil Lomax has a better completion percentage for a career; however, his body of work was cut short by injuries, and isn't nearly as long as Hart's). He wasn't even drafted by the Cards; he was a chance UDFA pickup, as the fourth of four QBs in 1966. By the time Don Coryell took over the Cards in 1973 (after the disastrous Gary Cuozzo experiment), Hart was ready for the passing attack Coryell installed. Career stats: 18 seasons with the Cards, 2,593 completions, 5,076 attempts, 209 TDs vs. 247 interceptions, 34,665 total yards (most in team history), with a 51.1% career rating (Pro Football Reference). Hart is 68 years young, and living in Florida. Let's not induct him posthumously, please? And we should retire his number (17), too.

Here is a list of players that I personally remember, and recommend, for inclusion in the Ring of Honor. Some have not yet finished their careers, so they must wait. Some may not want to be included; they may have had a cross word or two with the team (Anquan Boldin). Some, you youngsters may have never heard of. In any case, here they are. Did I leave anyone worthy out? Is anyone on my list unworthy?

In no particular order:

Larry Centers RB

A terrific threat out of the backfield, Centers was Mr. Offense for most of his tenure with the team. Why isn't he already there?

Adrian Wilson S

No need to rehash what Wilson meant to the team. He's in after he's done playing.

Kurt Warner QB

He took us to our only Super Bowl appearance. What higher honor is there?

Jim Hart QB

I've already pleaded my case for the outstanding ‘Air Coryell' star above. He's waited too long.

Roy Green WR

A fantastic receiver, Larry Fitzgerald's career may someday be mentioned in the same breath as Roy Green's. He saved many a possession in his career.

Stump Mitchell RB

Currently a Cardinals RB coach, Mitchell was a tough SOB with sure hands out of the backfield. When Mitchell blocked you, you felt it for a week after.

Terry Metcalf RB

As described above, Metcalf is the player who defined the ‘plane of the goal' rule forever. His son Eric also played a year for the Cards.

Ottis Anderson RB

The all-time rushing yardage leader in team history (7,999 yds) should be enough to get him in the ring. Especially with the RBs the team has used in the last few years. Finally got his SB ring with the Giants.

Neil Lomax QB

Lomax succeeded the great Jim Hart, and put up pretty good numbers, until too many sacks forced him to retire and have hip replacement surgery.

Ricky Proehl WR

Was Jake Plummer's favorite target for the few years he played here. Was sure-handed and reliable, caught everything thrown his way.

Jake Plummer QB

A popular draft choice of Cardinals fans, the ASU standout was nicknamed "the Snake" in college for his ability to wriggle out of trouble nearly every time. Perhaps not enough time has elapsed to appreciate how good he really was.

Simeon Rice DT

A terror on every defensive play, Rice was a player opposing offenses had to prepare for.

Anquan Boldin WR

Still playing, and his trade to the Ravens left a bad taste in his mouth. Still, teaming with Fitzgerald made both players better, and a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators.

Larry Stallings LB

A great linebacker for the Cards, he played in the shadows of the greats in the league, like Dick Butkus and Alex Karras. Never was recognized for the terrific player he was.

Vai Sikahema PR/KR

Like his successor, Patrick Peterson, Sikahema was a definite threat to score whenever he caught the ball. Fans didn't dare leave their seats to get a hot dog when Sikahema was about to receive the ball. Sikahema was fast, shifty and popular with the fans.

Kwamie Lassiter S

Lassiter was a no-nonsense, hit-‘em-first-ask-questions-later kind of player. Later known as the guy wearing #42 on the Cardinals, forcing Pat Tillman to switch to #40. Tillman wasn't the type of guy to care about numbers, though.

I've had my say. What say you, ROTB Best and Brightest?
