It's a close game so far. Join us in the second half.

The Arizona Cardinals, after a terrible start, now trail the Seattle Seahawks 17-10 at halftime. They only have 69 yards of offense, Carson Palmer has an interception. However, Calais Campbell is having a beast of a game, Matt Shaughnessy has had a pair very good plays, one that was a sack/fumble.

Seattle will get the ball to start the second half. Are you there with us?

Talk about it. Any halftime predictions?

Playing a Thursday game against a division foe after losing a tough, physical road game to another divisional foe on a short week is akin to adding salt to an open wound. While the Arizona Cardinals do have a tough matchup in the Seattle Seahawks, they are at least playing at home. Thankfully for the Cardinals the Seahawks have struggled in Arizona and are also on a short week after a physical game.

What to Look For:

Seattle's defense again is one of the best in the league. Overall Seattle is ranked 2nd in the nation in total yards per game, giving up a scant 290 yards per game. Seattle is 2nd in the NFL in passing yards allowed in the NFL and 11th in rush defense. They will be the best defense the Cardinals have faced all year. If there is ever a time for the Cardinals offense to turn it on, it's now. The Cardinals may be able to run the ball against Seattle and could even find success in the air with Arizona matching up well with Seattle's physical DBs.

Offense:

The Cardinals offensive line is going to be in for another battle against another very good front seven that excels at stopping the run. The Cardinals catch a small break in that Seattle has been average at getting to the passer with 16 sacks on the season, tied for 13th in the NFL with Arizona, St. Louis and Oakland. Many Seahawk fans have touted the strength of their pass rush by dropping Michael Bennett's name but he only has 3.5 sacks on the season and is their team leader in that category. The interior of the Cardinals line should hold up well in pass protection, especially considering their success against some of the premier interior players in the NFL. The outside could be another issue for Arizona as Seattle has great DE depth with Chris Clemons, Cliff Avril, and the aforementioned Bennett who are all playing well. Bradley Sowell and Eric Winston will again be key reasons on whether the Cardinals will be successful on offense against the Seahawks.

Arizona is also challenged in that Seattle is tied for 4th in interceptions with nine on the year and have also forced 10 fumbles, recovering 8 of them. However despite the awesome numbers and rankings Seattle has accumulated Arizona can move the ball against them. In an excellent break down by Seth Cox, he shows a Seattle weakness in how they tend to stack the box against running teams. Seattle is weakest against the run and the Cardinals have shown that when they are dedicated to running the ball they can churn out some yards and open up the play action pass. Look for Arizona to mimic the Colts game plan and run often in an attempt to establish the play action pass and create favorable matchups for the Cardinals wide receivers.

Defense:

On offense Seattle is 10th in the league in total yards per game. The bulk of their 372 yards per game comes from their stellar rushing offense which is currently 2nd in the NFL in yards per game, averaging 158 yards per game. Arizona faces a similar challenge in the Seahawks as they did with 49ers, a run heavy team using a power scheme. The big difference in this week's matchup is that while Seattle two fold, their line is not near as good as San Francisco's and they do not have a TE of Vernon Davis's caliber. As TE's seem to be the kryptonite for this defense, it bodes well for the Cardinals as the Seahawks do not have great TE weapons. The TE's for Seattle have combined for 17 receptions, a meager 17.5% of Russell Wilson's completions.

Seattle has no clear number one receiver and truly no receiver that can change a team's game plan like a Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. Todd Bowles may stick to his formula of having Patrick Peterson shutting down whoever he is lined up against, or he could take advantage of this and have him play a more dynamic part in the defense. Pat Pete and the Honey Badger on a double DB blitz? Sounds fun and huge risk and reward type of call. These are the type of calls that Arizona will need call and have success with to win the game. Look for the Cardinals to utilize more DB blitzes and force the Seahawks WRs to beat us instead of Marshawn Lynch.

Seattle's offense line is in bad shape and has led to 17 Wilson sacks. Wilson is an extremely elusive QB and so I do not think it is a huge leap to say that most other QBs behind his line may be into the mid 20's in sacks. Arizona lately has been doing a good job at getting pressure on QBs and did a great job on Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick in limiting their scrambles. Wilson is far more elusive than the previous two QBs so it is essential that they keep him bottled up. While Wilson can be a dangerous pocket passer but he has struggled this season with ugly games against San Fran, Houston, and Indy. Look to see Arizona stack the box and dare Wilson to beat him on his arm. He can definitely do it, but it will be hard against a stout Arizona line and the dual threat of Daryl Washington and Karlos Dansby roaming the middle. If Campbell plays it will be even harder with the big 6'8 monster towering over him.

A look at some gameday info before the two teams actually face off.

With the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks playing on Thursday Night Football, why not look at some numbers history and more? This will be the first of three straight games at home for Arizona. They are looking to win their first divisional game.

Let's look at some of the facts.

Stats:

Seattle comes into town with the league's second ranked defense and 10th ranked offense. However, the offense has been carried by the running game, where they have gained the second most yards in the league.

Arizona will counter that with the league's fifth best rushing defense and 15th overall. They will have to do more offensively than they have. The unit ranks 26th overall.

Arizona has allowed one more touchdown than they have scored. Seattle has scored six more than they have allowed.

Carson Palmer has been intercepted 11 times through the first six weeks, while Russell Wilson has thrown only four picks so far.

As a team, the Seahawks run the ball very well, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Arizona allows 3.8.

The one area in which Arizona is superior, it is in the sacks allowed. Carson Palmer has been sacked 13 times in six games while Russell Wilson has been sacked 17 times.

Turnovers could play a key role. Arizona has a -2 ratio in the turnover battle on the season. Seattle is +7, despite having fumbled the ball 13 times. They have lost only six of those fumbles.

History:

This will be the 29th time the two teams play. Arizona holds a slight 15-13 advantage in the all-time set. Home has been good to the Cardinals when playing Seattle. They have won seven of the last nine at home, and the only time that Arizona lost to Seattle in University of Phoenix Stadium was 2010. They are overall 9-4 against the Seahawks. They have split the last two seasons, each team winning at home.

The last time the two played, Seattle walloped the Cards, defeating them 58-0 in Seattle. However, in 2012 Week 1, Arizona beat them 20-16. It was Russell Wilson's NFL debut.

Connections between the teams:

On the Cardinals, two offensive linemen are former Seahawks -- starting guard Paul Fanaika, who was with them in 2010 and 2011. Backup center Mike Gibson was there from 2009-2011.

O'Brien Schofield, who spent 2010-2012 with Arizona, is now a Seahawk. He joined them after the Cards waived him at the start of training camp.

Other facts:

This will be the first time in his career that quarterback Carson Palmer will face Pete Carroll as an opposing coach. Carroll was Palmer's head coach at USC, where he won the Heisman Trophy.

Seattle is 2-5 on Thursday night games.

Although this is Bruce Arians' first true head coaching job, the teams he has coached as an assistant or as a coordinator have done well on Thursday nights. His teams are 8-1 on Thursdays.

A look at the final injury report before the teams' Thursday night game.

The final injury reports are out for both the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals for sure have one player out with injury, while the Seahawks have three that are for sure not going to play.

For Arizona, that one player is receiver Brittan Golden, who injured his hamstring during the team's 32-20 loss on Sunday.

The biggest question mark that remains is to see whether defensive end Calais Campbell will play or not. Despite head coach Bruce Arians saying on the radio that he was cleared to play, doctors will give the final word on Thursday night. He is officially listed as questionable for the game.

Everyone else on the Arizona injury report is listed as probable, which include Larry Fitzgerald, John Abraham, Karlos Dansby, Kenny Demens, Jim Dray Rob Housler, Rashad Johnson and Ronald Talley.

Seattle has three players listed as out for the game -- tackle Breno Giancomini, LB Bobby Wagner and running back Spencer Ware.

Defensive end Chris Clemons is officially listed as questionable for the game, while running back Marshawn Lynch and tight end Zach Miller are probable.

At about 4 PM Arizona time we will get word on who will be inactive.

Using unscientific means to predict the actual game's outcome.

The Cardinals play the Seattle Seahawks this week following a very physical match up with the San Francisco 49ers. Two big take aways from last week was the improvement of the offensive line and that their is an offense hidden under those interceptions. There were two big plays that new LT Bradley Sowell messed up, the first being in the endzone and letting a player breeze by him which caused a safety. He shares credit for that safety with Carson Palmer who did hold the ball too long on that play, but in man-to-man contests Sowell had one responsibility and he missed his assignment until the defensive end was already two yards behind him. The other big play he missed was the only other sack allowed to the 49ers impressive defense. Allowing two sacks in one game is not the way you want to start your career, but considering that other than those two growing pains he played a great game and the rest of the line played a great game shows that this team is fielding a serviceable line which should help calm the nerves of trigger happy Carson Palmer.

Making Palmer feel more comfortable in the pocket will only improve his numbers and those of the offense. I stated in the game thread that I was officially not a Palmer fan, and while that was a statement made in the heat of the moment, I will state that until he calms down and realizes that he has average to above average protection he is not going to be able to tap into the potential of what the offense can be. But as shown in the 3rd quarter against a great defense, the Cardinals can put up points when everything is clicking.

How will all of this affect the simulation this week? The updated week 7 roster has been uploaded and Sowell is a 65 overall, probably due to giving up a safety and two sacks last week. I put him back to a 75 with a 65 awareness to try to reflect his growing pains at LT, but represent his skills and technique with 75 in pass and run blocking. We'll see if that helps the offense click this week.

Simulation note:

I kept Calais Campbell in at LE due to his positive status so far this week.

Game summary:

The first quarter started with Palmer moving the ball using Housler a lot, unlike real life, and stalling at midfield causing a punt. On the first Seahawks play Karlos Dansby causes a fumble which he recovers at the Seahawks 20 yard line. Using Mendenhall to try and drive the ball closer to the goal line the Cardinals get to the 12 before throwing on 3rd and short which is intercepted at the 5 yard line and returned back to the Cardinals 35 yard line by the Seahawks Thomas. Following a pass to Golden Tate and three rushes by Lynch the Seahawks score.

The second quarter is dominated by both defenses causing punts until the Cardinals defense began getting tired and allows a 10 play drive which ended with another Lynch touchdown. In a two minute drill the Cardinals are able to drive the ball to the Seahawks 30 yard line and have to settle for a field goal.

The third quarter is much like the second, filled with two dominant defenses performances. Neither team can get to the red zone, but with a good defense you don't need scores from your offense as shown by 1st and 10 pass which is intercepted at the 20 yard line by the Seahawks Wagner and returned for a TD.

The Cardinals are finally able to put a drive together in the beginning of the fourth quarter. While Palmer had been targeting Andre Roberts and Mendenhall for the first three quarters he finally remembered that he has All-Pro Larry Fitzgerald who can also catch footballs. One a six play drive Larry catches three passes for more than 12 yards each and takes the third in for a touchdown. The defense really pours it on Russell Wilson with 4:00 minutes left, causing a 6 yard loss on a sack and forces a three and out giving the Cardinals the ball back with 3:45 remaining. Another six play drive which features Michael Floyd making big catches of 21 and 15 yards gets the Cardinals to the five yard line. Using an over the shoulder fade Palmer passes a 5 yard pass to Michael Floyd for a touchdown. Coach Arians calls for a two point conversion attempt, but Palmer is unable to connect with Golden in the endzone with 1:38 remaining in the game.

Russell Wilson uses his clock management skills to milk every second off of the clock with consecutive runs by Marshawn Lynch causing the Cardinals to use their three time outs. The Cardinals get the ball backs with 33 seconds remaining. In desperation the Cardinals try long shots down the field but waiting for the play to develop causes Palmer to be sacked twice. On third down the Cardinals make one catch for 20 yards to Andre Roberts allowing Palmer to run up and spike the ball with three second left. On the final play of the game Hail Mary pass Palmer's throw in dropped by Andre Roberts at the four yard line, where he would have been short of the endzone due to coverage had he caught the ball.

Box Score: 1 || 2 || 3 || 4 || Final

Seattle 7 || 7 || 7 || 0 || 21

Arizona 0 || 3 || 0 || 1 || 16

Team Stats Seahawks Cardinals

Total Offense 237 259

Rushing Yds 117 24

Passing Yds 120 235

First Downs 11 12

Turnovers 1(+1) 2(-1)

3rd Down Conv 5-12(41%) 3-13(23%)

4th Down Conv 0-0(0%) 2-3(66%)

The takeaway, the Cardinals lack of a rushing attack and the four sacks really hurt the Cardinals in this contest. Three of the four sacks were attributed to Sowell and the fourth to Mendenhall. Let's hope the Cardinals get lucky and give Sowell some help on the left side during critical plays after learning that lesson against the 49ers.
