A look at who got playing time on Thursday defensively.

The Seattle Seahawks officially had 64 offensive plays on Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals, and league stats say that there were 67 total snaps.

Defensively, four Cardinals players never left the field. They were among the regulars to be the ironmen -- safety Yeremiah Bell, cornerback Patrick Peterson and linebackers Daryl Washington and Karlos Dansby.

Looking at the defensive backs, Rashad Johnson also almost never left the field -- going 65 snaps, while cornerback Jerraud Powers had 64 snaps. Tyrann Mathieu was used much less than in other games. He got 36 snaps. Antoine Cason, who has settled into the role of dime cornerback, only got five snaps, which is about what I remember seeing in dime packages.

The linebackers hardly changed. After Dansby and Washington never left the field, John Abraham got a ton of time, logging 65 snaps. Matt Shaughnessy was on the field for 52 snaps and then Marcus Benard, who actually started the game, played 11 snaps.

On the defensive line, Calais Campbell was on the field for 61 snaps, followed by Darnell Dockett, who got 51, Alameda Ta'amu, with 19 snaps and Dan Williams with 11. Frostee Rucker played 18 snaps and Ronald Talley got six.

Based on my initial charting defensively, the Cards used a slightly different philosophy defensively. They used a lot of base personnel again like against San Francisco, but they never went with the eight-man front like we saw the week before. Jasper Brinkley did not even play one snap defensively. I don't recall hardly any four-man fronts. In nickel packages, they went with the two man line, which is what they did all last season.

The one absence that will likely draw the most criticism is the fact that Tony Jefferson did not play at all defensively. That is because Rashad Johnson was healthy.

The defensive backs personnel has changed a little. Jefferson is still and will likely remain the fourth safety. That means a lot has to happen to get him on the field.

Against Detroit, he was the dime DB. Base personnel in the defensive backfield was Peterson, Powers, Johnson and Bell. Add Mathieu as the nickel guy. Against the Lions, when they went dime, Yeremiah Bell was brought down with the linebackers and Jefferson was brought in as another safety.

After that, he got time when Johnson was hurt. He would come in on nickel packages because Mathieu, who was the starting free safety then, would move to the slot.

Now that everyone is healthy, the dime package looks different. Against Detroit, it was Jefferson that came in as the sixth DB. No longer is that the case. Now it is Antoine Cason, and he plays around the line of scrimmage. Bell moves around all over the place. Sometimes he is deep. Sometimes he lines up to cover a guy and others he is in the box like a linebacker.

The question now is whether Jefferson should get more time. Bell has allowed six touchdowns in coverage. However, clearly the coaching staff likes him, otherwise he would not be playing every single snap on defense.

That is a discussion to be had.

A look at who played and how much

The Arizona Cardinals had 70 offensive plays last Thursday night when they played and lost to the Seattle Seahawks. According to league stats, there were 75 snaps. As we do each week, I give you the snap count numbers on each side of the ball. First up is the offensive side. The formations and personnel groupings will come later. I still need to look back at the game again to confirm my charting from the press box.

Normally, the quarterback and everyone on the offensive line play all the snaps. Injuries changed that.

Carson Palmer, Bradley Sowell, Lyle Sendlein, Paul Fanaika and Eric Winston played all 75 snaps. Guard Daryn Colledge played 40 before coming out. Nate Potter replaced him. He played 42 snaps, which means he got 35 at left guard and then another seven as a tackle eligible (when I chart it, I list it as a tight end). It wasn't just in 13 personnel he showed up. I believe he was the second tight end a couple of times with Jim Dray.

At tight end, it was Jim Dray that technically was the starter. He was the numebr one tight end to start the game when the offense opened in 11 personnel, rather than Rob Housler. Housler ended up getting more snaps, though. Housler played 44 snaps, Dray 36 and Kory Sperry was in for one snap.

Looking at the receivers, Larry Fitzgerald got 72 snaps, Michael Floyd 71, Andre Roberts 47, Jaron Brown 18 and Patrick Peterson three.

Among the running backs, Andre Ellington got the most playing time with 31 snaps. Rashard Mendenhall was in for 24 and Alfonso Smith got 21. Stepfan Taylor did not see the field on offense.

Aside from the injury, there wasn't a lot to notice in playing time, except that Smith saw a lot more time. He was not used at all in the running game, but he caught four passes. He was clearly in the game for pass protection. There was one play I noticed that looked a little funny. You had to know that a pass was coming. Tight end Jim Dray was the player lined up in the backfield like a running back. Ideally, though, if Smith is going to get playing time, he should see a carry or two, if for anything else than to keep the defense honest. If he is on the field only when they pass, that grouping becomes obvious. Now, it may very well have been that he was on the field when it was third and long, so it wound up being that way.

As for Ellington, in 31 snaps, he carried the ball only three times and only had two catches. He was targeted five times. Clearly, he was not involved enough. Also, it likely means that Seattle made sure in their game plan to limit his effectiveness.

The plays were there, but someone always seemed to miss their responsibility resulting in another frustratingly bad offensive output by the Cardinals.

It’s been a frustrating season so far for the Cardinals and their fans alike.

When you sit down and watch the games, you see a team that is "close", something we have talked about a lot, but close in the NFL gets you fired.

It’s about results, and about seeing those results manifest into victories, because the only way you maintain a job in this league is by winning games, and while some fans didn’t expect year one of a "transition" to yield immediate results, the talk of the coaching staff and front office suggested that they expected more than what we’ve seen.

What becomes even more frustrating is that the coaching staff has done a good job of putting the players into positions to make plays, and the players have just failed to do so.

The misses versus the Seahawks-

Quarter: 1
Down and distance: 3-3
Personnel: 20 (2 backs/3WRs/0TEs)
Play: RB flare screen

The Cardinals third play from scrimmage should have been an ominous sign of things to come for Cardinals fans, but we have become enamored with minor victories (getting a first down on the play) that the fact they may have missed a home run isn’t as big of a deal as it should have been.

The play is set up perfectly, as the wide receivers are able to drive the DB’s into the middle of the field enough to give the offensive line a chance to get out in front of Andre Ellington on the screen, leaving the offensive linemen one on one with the defensive backs and Andre Roberts with a linebacker.

If the linemen get the block, well there isn’t much in front of him to stop him from turning this little screen into a big play.

Alas, Paul Fanaika whiffs on his block, and Ellington has to hold up and make the first man miss, instead of catching and going up the field, which results in a nice first down pick up, but still leaves the Cardinals 69 yards away from pay dirt, which may as well be an ocean for this offense.

Quarter: 1
Down and distance: 1-10
Personnel: 12 (1 back/2WRs/2TEs)
Play: TE Wheel route with wide receiver verticals

This is the play many have placed blame on Palmer for the under thrown, some have said it was pass interference on Browner, and others have blamed Fitzgerald for not winning the "jump ball" that was under thrown.

The problem with any of that is the play wasn’t won or lost there, it was lost before the ball ever left Palmer’s hand, because he never moved the single high safety in Earl Thomas.

It should always be assumed in single high coverage, especially against the Seahawks, that the help will come to the Fitz side of the field, specifically if Sherman isn’t in coverage.

Palmer on the snap looks lazily to the right, Thomas doesn't move at all, then snaps his head back to the left and lofts the ball up to the single covered Fitz, but doesn't put the ball out in front, or with enough zip to get the ball on Fitz soon enough to negate Thomas playing single high.

This was obviously going to Fitzgerald no matter what, because from the jump the only person not covered better than Fitz was Jim Dray.

The offensive line actually held up really well and Palmer should have been able to pull down the ball and look elsewhere, or just thrown the ball better.

Yes the interception part of the play was an AMAZING play, but it should never have been a concern for the Cardinals, because there were better options in the routes.

Quarter: 2
Down and distance: 3-7
Personnel: 10 (1back/4WRs)
Play: Triple drags/ Fitz out

Another play that resulted in a nice throw and catch for a Cardinals first down, where Palmer found Floyd running off a Jaron Brown "pick", the quarterback had Roberts slightly deeper behind Floyd running wide open in the secondary.

The play in and of itself didn't make a ton of sense from the jump.

Why are the Cardinals throwing so short on third and seven? Yes Floyd made people miss, but get to the sticks and don't leave it up to a pretty good run after the catch to make a first down, but the bad part was, Palmer had Roberts running open in the intermediate with no defensive backs paying attention outside of the deep safety.

Roberts is open, Roberts is past the sticks, and Roberts probably is able to make a big play after the catch with only one guy paying any attention to him.

Again, the play worked because Floyd got the pick from Brown, and then made some nice moves to pick up the first, but there was another wide open receiver, that could have yielded a bigger play in an offense desperate for big plays.

Quarter: 3
Down and distance: 1-10
Personnel: 12 (1RB/2WR/2TE)
Play: RB wheel route

It's hard to break down this play, because everything was perfect, but the execution by the quarterback AND running back, so just watch the missed opportunity, when the Cardinals could have cut it to 31-20 instead of 31-16.

Why blame Ellington? If he keeps running instead of jumping, well maybe he makes the play, instead he jumps and tries to make a spectacular one handed grab on another inappropriately placed ball.

Alas...

The Cardinals offense isn't clicking, everyone knows and has seen that, but the reason has more to do with execution, missed opportunities, and just down right bad play.

The head coach either has the unluckiest Qb in the league or is covering for his player.

When the Arizona Cardinals lost 34-22 on Thursday night to the Seattle Seahawks, one of the problems was that quarterback Carson Palmer threw a pair of interceptions.

Initially, head coach Bruce Arians felt that the second of the two was a poor decision. He changed his message on Friday after watching the tape.

Immediately after the game Thursday, Arians said this:

"The first (interception) to me was obvious pass interference, and the safety makes a great play. The second one was just a poor decision."

Then on Friday, Arians said this (via Arizona Sports):

"Neither interception was his fault whatsoever,he protected the ball like he needed to, and we've got to make better plays."

Palmer himself noted that the second interception he thought that Seattle should have been flagged for pass intterference. incredibly

Arians is either fiercely defensive for his players or Palmer is just incredibly unlucky this year.

in the meantime, if Palmer keeps up this rate, he will surpass the number of picks he threw all last season, and do it before the bye week.

What are the Cardinals to do?

Were there any?

After another brutal loss to a division rival it is hard to find any positives. Yet again Palmer threw multiple picks and yet again the offense failed to do much of anything.

Michael Floyd:

Floyd had a good game and should have had an even better one but suffered a few seemingly blatant PI calls. This morning I woke up and was still upset on the no call Seahawk Safety Earl Thomas got away with a blatant PI by holding down Floyds hand. Floyd finished the day with 6 receptions on 10 targets with 71 yards receiving.

Rob Housler:

Houlser has been the trendy pick for a break out player of the game and finally tonight he made some noise with a team high 7 receptions on 7 targets for 53 yards. While he didn't break anything big he got open and caught everything that was thrown his way. Hopefully this is beginning of a new trend where our pass receiving TE actually catches a few passes and does some damage.

Calais Campbell:

After a big scare in San Fransisco, Campbell was able to play and he played very well often getting into the backfield and causing disruptions. On the day he had 8 total tackles, 7 of them solo and a TFL. Campbell looks as if he is returning to form and has been playing very well as of late. Hopefully with an easier schedule coming up his dominant play will lead to bigger dividends.

John Abraham:

The performance we had all been waiting for finally came. Abraham dominated Seattle's tackles thoroughly collecting 2 sacks and forcing two fumbles, one which was recovered by the Cardinals. Abraham was also a constant source pressure put the team in a good position to stay competitive.

Jay Feely:

Most of the time when you mention a kicker it's not a good thing. Feely however has responded well to the preseason criticism he got and again was reliable and perfect on the day. He made all 3 FGs and even nailed a long of 52. His one kickoff that was returned was pinned deep by special teams.

The Arizona Cardinals still have a long way to go before they begin to compete in the NFC West and after a brutal two game stretch the schedule does lighten up with two winnable games. Hopefully Arizona can capitalize and get this team back into contention.

Was there any silver lining in last nights loss by the Arizona Cardinals to the Seattle Seahawks?

Week 7 is officially in the books for the Arizona Cardinals as a loss. Thursday night, prime time television and a divisional match-up against the Seattle Seahawks put the Cards on nationally for everyone to see and the results weren't what the Cards were hoping for in a 34-22 loss.

Even in defeat there was a few bright spots for the Cardinals. Offensively rookie WR Jaron Brown caught his first touchdown of his career, snatching the ball out of the air while deep in the end zone. Jay Feely was also sharp on the day, going 3/3 for field goal attempts. Rashard Mendenhall also added a rushing touchdown on the day.

Defensively, John Abraham got pressure on Russell Wilson most of the night, sacking him twice and forcing 3 fumbles in the process, two of which the Cardinals recovered.

Now for the bad, and there was plenty of it. Starting with the offense again, the Cards managed only 234 yards of offense, 30 of those coming from their anemic rushing game. Carson Palmer threw two more picks, taking his total to 13 interceptions in 7 game played.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cards struggled to stop the Seahawks on 3rd down conversions and Marshawn Lynch had a field day, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Now we wrap up with the ugly, which falls on the offensive line. All nigh the offensive unit was out muscled at the line of scrimmage by the Seahawks defensive front. Eric Winston and Bradley Sowell had their names dropped every series, almost as much as people talk about Miley Cyrus.

And Mike Mayock said it on national television. The Cards need a mobile young QB, a LT and a few other pieces to compete. I'm in agreement, but there are 9 more games to be had on the season before any of that can be addressed.

Now the Cards gear up for the Atlanta Falcons in 10 days. Hopefully that's enough time to fix some of the issues above.

There were still many of the same issues that have long been plaguing the team.

Well, the Arizona Cardinals laid an egg again on Thursday Night Football for the second year in a row. There wasn't much to be pleased about, but much to pick apart. Here are some of the worst.

1. More turnovers

This continues to plague the Cardinals week after week. Carson Palmer threw another two interceptions, bringing him to 13 on the season. He threw 14 all last season. The only way the Cards have a chance win games against quality teams, especially with the offensive inconsistencies, is to not turn the ball over. Turnovers cost them a win in San Francisco. They weren't the reason for Thursday's loss, but they certainly did not make things better.

2. No running game

After 109 yards against a stout 49ers defense, there was hope that they could continue the trend and have at least a running threat. Nope. Not against Seattle. They had 18 carries for 30 yards. Andre Ellington, who had been a big play machine thus far, managed only three yards on three carries. It looked early like they would be able to do it, Rashard Mendenhall's second carry was for six yards. His third was for five yards. But then only one other carry the rest of the way went for more than three yards.

3. Those damn tight ends

Tight ends scored another pair of touchdowns. That is now five of seven games in which opposing tight ends score two touchdowns. It has reached the absolutely absurd with how bad the Cards are at covering them.

4. Sacks and more sacks

The offensive line in six previous games had only allowed 13 sacks, despite bad offensive line play. Seattle sacked Carson Palmer seven times on Thursday. It is very reminiscent of the 2012 Week 5 game on Thursday Night Football. In four previous games, the Cards QBs were sacked only 14 times, but Kevin Kolb was sacked nine times in St. Louis. It was a week later that Kolb was hurt for the rest of the season.

Palmer is a quarterback that MUST have at least some protection or he is going to be terrible. How you can see why he has 13 interceptions.

5. Where did the great rush defense go?

For the second week in a row, the Cardinals' rush defense was not the unit it was the first five weeks of the season. They gave up 135 yards rushing to the Seahawks and they averages over four yards per carry. Marshawn Lynch had 21 carries for 91 yards. The tackling was not great. They made some plays, but overall were just unable to have the same success defensively. Was that great defense against the run just a mirage?

...

Clearly there are more issues. Talk about them in the comment section. Which negatives were the biggest ones? What did we miss?
