Cardinals use a strong second half defensively and offensively to pull out a nail biter.

The Houston Texans have failed miserably in the second half of the team record 6 game losing streak. The Arizona Cardinals wanted it to continue.

Mission accomplished. Houston has a problem.

The Texans were held to 41 total yards after the intermission and the Cardinals, despite 3 turnovers, won 27-24 Sunday.

Carson Palmer was 20 of 32 for 241 yards with 2 TDs and another interception (with a fumble) and unexpected touchdown sightings from Andre Roberts and Rob Housler (first in NFL) overcame what could have been a very bad fumble by Rashard Mendenhall deep in Arizona territory late in the game. John Abraham was credited with 3 sacks on defense(first one questionable) and moved past the late Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas with 128.

Houston had come into the came losing a team record six straight games. The club was without Pro Bowlers Arian Foster, Brian Cushing, Owen Daniels and head coach Gary Kubiak was out because of a mini-stroke. Didn't seem to matter as Texas took a 17 -14 halftime lead and nearly won the game from outstanding performances from two stars that still remain: Andre Johnson and J. J. Watts. Johnson had 2 beautiful receiving TDs with excellent footwork in the endzone ruling over superb Patrick Peterson coverage and Watts had 4 tackles, 3 QB hits on Palmer and two fumble recoveries, including the sack. strip and recovery right before the half.

Cardinals started the game in a flurry with the first Abrahams sack (strip?), Calais Campbell pressure and Matt Shaunessy recovery and 6 yard walk into the endzone on the very first play from scrimmage.

Texans answered right back with a 8 play 49 yard drive that resulted with Johnson's 60th career TD, an absolute toe-tapper and the 4th from Texan's Casey Keenum in 2 games.

Cardinals responded with a 6 play 58 yard drive that ended with the much-maligned Housler getting his first NFL score in three seasons.

Keenum used the play action to find rookie TE Ryan Griffin (Texans used the fake very effectively all game) for a 2 yard score after Palmer threw his 15th iNT of the season and in 9 consecutive games(Hello, Elias Sport Bureau, gotta be close to the record, no?) for the 17-14 halftime lead, but not before Justin Bethel had blocked the last gasp 39 yard FG before the half.

Cards second offensive series provided a "Wildcat" look wth Andre Ellington (11 carries for 55 yards) at QB and Peterson at WR. They ran the formation three plays with Ellington going up the middle for gains on the first two and Peterson losing 4 yards end-around on the third snap.

Another second half drive had the team getting most of their game rshing yards with catches from little used TE Jim Dray, runs from Stephan Taylor and Mendenhall and capped by the Roberts 19 yard TD.

The Watt FR and Johnson TD provided late drama but not enough for the Cardinals to pull off the win.

The team is now over .500 at 5-4, still third in the division and play on the road in Jacksonville next week.

Arrows seem to be pointing up, but what do you say?

Keep the conversation going.

The Arizona Cardinals trail the Houston Texans 17-14 at halftime in a game in which the offense has once again struggled. Carson Palmer has an interception and a fumble, but the defense scored a touchdown on the first play of the game from scrimmage.

They will receive the kick to start the second half.

So far, Larry Fitzgerald has only one catch for 11 yards (and an offensive pass interference penalty). Palmer is 8/15 for 103 yards, one TD (to Rob Housler) and an INT (trying to throw it to Housler).

Rashard Mendenhall has four carries for 10 yards, while Andre Ellington has four carries for 33 yards.

Michael Floyd injured his shoulder in the first half and is questionable to return.

For Houston, Case Keenum is 15/26 for 159 and two scores. Ben Tate has run the ball nine times for 30 yards. Deandre Hopkins has three catches for 43 yards and Andre Johnson has two for 21 and a score.

Can the team come back? he offense needs to do something! Talk about it.

For the Cardinals, there are no big surprises.

Receiver Brittan Golden tested out his sore hamstring and he apparently did not feel good enough to go. He is one of the team's seven inactives.

Here are who will not dress for Arizona:

WR Brittan Golden

A look at the Week 10 matchup.

The 4-4 Arizona Cardinals will host the 2-6 Houston Texans at University of Phoenix Stadium Sunday afternoon. For the 80th straight contest at the stadium, it will be a sellout. The Cardinals are coming off a bye week and a 27-13 win two weeks ago over the Atlanta Falcons. The Texans have lost six straight games and are desperate to get back on track.

Let's take a look at the matchup between the two.

Stats:

The Texans are a bit of a statistical anomaly. They are eighth in total offense (yardage), while the Cardinals are 29th, but they have scored only 146 points. Arizona has scored 160. Likewise, Houston has the number one overall defense in terms of yards, but have given up 221 points. Arizona's 13th-ranked squad has allowed 174 points in eight games.

Obviously, the difference is turnovers. Houston is a -11 on the season with their turnover ratio. Arizona is +1, and that is even with Carson Palmer having thrown 14 interceptions himself.

Houston has been hurt by untimely turnovers and turnovers that score. Opponents have scored seven touchdowns on returns. They gave up a pick-six in five straight games. The defense has only created five turnovers. Arizona has created 19.

Houston averages almost 394 yards of offense per game. They only score just over 18 points. Arizona only averages 314 yards per game, but scores 20 per game.

In terms of pass rushing and pass protections, both teams are similar. Arizona has allowed 23 sacks and has sacked opposing quarterbacks 23 times. Houston also has given up 23 and has sacked the quarterback 20 times.

Arizona will face Houston's Case Keenum at quarterback, who has had a memorable start to his career. In two games, he has thrown for four touchdowns and no interceptions and has an average of 10.53 yards per attempted pass.

History:

There is very little history between the teams. It is only the third time in the regular season they meet. They played in Houston in 2005, when Houston won. Then, in 2009, the last time they played, Arizona came away with a home victory. Ironically enough, much like the Texans' 2013 losses, Arizona won in 2009 on a Matt Schaub pick-six. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted a pass and returned it 49 yards with just over two minutes left in the game to give Arizona a 28-21 win.

Connections:

The Texans have one former Cardinal. That is defensive lineman Antonio Smith, who left the Cardinals after the 2008 season. he was drafted by Arizona in the fifth round of the 2004 draft.

Arizona has right tackle Eric Winston as their only former Texan (player). He played 92 games from 2006-2011 for Houston.

This would be the finest performance of the year -- virtual or real.

The Arizona Cardinals turn the tables on the Texans and shut out a hungry team to open up the second half of the season. This matchup is a smash mouth day where two top defenses fought to the end keeping scores hard to come by, but ultimately the Texans offense was unable to get going with the lack of the ground game and Texans QB Case Keenum having a tough day against the Cardinals secondary.

With a 21-0 victory it simply is too incredible to believe, especially since the fourth quarter touchdown is capped off by a 2-point conversion, which would essentially be salting the wound with 3:15 left in the game. But let's see the breakdowns anyway so we can see how well the Cardinals had prepared for the Texans

Top Performers:

Cardinals:

QB: Carson Palmer 21/32 (65%) 252 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, 110.4 Rating

D/ST: Daryl Washington 7 solo tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack

Texans:

QB: Case Keenum 8/27 (29%) 67 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 39.6 Rating

WR: Andre Johnson 4 rec, 41 yards, 10.2 avg

RB: Dennis Johnson 7 att, 17 yards, 2.4 avg

Not listed above is Mendenhall also had 5 receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown for his best game of the year. If the Cardinals perform half as well I'm sure everyone here at ROTB would be ecstatic. Let's just hope that Madden gets it right this time.

Here is what Brett had to say.

ROTB: So...tell us about the QB situation. What exactly happened to Matt Schaub, and could Case Keenum really be the answer? What does he bring to the table?

BRB: Matt Schaub showed that he simply is not physically up to the task of being a starting quarterback anymore. He no longer had what little arm strength he used to possess to make throws down field, and his mobility went from minimal to downright nonexistent. Matt Schaub's main redeeming quality was intelligence with the football, and after all of those consecutive pick sixes, even that seemed to be gone too. The jury is still way, way out on Case Keenum. He is the kind of quarterback that does everything wrong and still magically gets results. It's as if the basic rule of not throwing a 40-yard rainbow across your body while running backwards does not apply to him, and I have no idea why. His gunslinger, throw-it-up play style might come back to bite him at some point, and I am still not remotely sold that he is a long term solution, but he has been fun to watch in the last two games.

ROTB: How bad is the injury situation at running back? Will Arian Foster or Ben Tate play on Sunday. If not, who will the Cardinals be seeing?

BRB: Foster is out, Tate is playing with broken ribs, and the Texans offensive line still employs Derek Newton. I would not be too worried about the Houston run game as long as Calais Campbell and Daryl Washington get to line up against guys like Wade Smith. It's almost not fair. As for who the Texans will put on the field, I expect a healthy mix of Ben Tate and rookie UDFA Dennis Johnson just like last week. Johnson is a smaller, speedier back who will look to get the edge early and often.

ROTB: How much will the coaching change affect the team this week, and how different will the playcalling look?

BRB: Honestly, I am not sure. However, the lack of Gary Kubiak calling the offense was evident last week as the Texans were held to just three second half points after virtually blowing out the Colts defense in the first half. I would like to think that Case Keenum, Andre Johnson, and DeAndre Hopkins will have some success on Sunday, but playing without their head coach on the road against a good defense is cause for concern. I personally am starting the Cardinals defense this week, for whatever that is worth.

ROTB: At 2-6, what have been the biggest issues or problems that you can pinpoint that would explain how such a talented team could be in such a bad situation?

BRB: Where to start? Special teams are horrific (again), clock management has been an issue all year long (again), injuries to star players have piled up (again), Ed Reed stole million of dollars from this organization, Matt Schaub became a shell of a quarterback, Brice McCain and Derek Newton are still on the roster. Take your pick, really. No amount of talent can overcome bad quarterback play, bad coaching decisions, and bad special teams. It's just flat out not possible. I hate to say it, but the Texans have literally become the 2010 San Diego Chargers.

ROTB: Maybe this is redundant, but what has been the season's biggest surprise, and what has been the biggest disappointment?

BRB: I think both the biggest surprise and disappointment is the Texans not being in the hunt for the first seed in the playoff picture. Houston was a Super Bowl favorite not three months ago. Now they are in the running for Jadaveon Clowney and Marcus Mariota. As a Texans fan, I have become used to seasons "not going our way", but the pain of having success and watching it slip into mediocrity is just plain gut wrenching. I know it does not quite compare, but I feel like this agony is in the same vein of Cardinals fans having to endure the Steelers party under the confetti. This was supposed to be our season. OUR. SEASON. Ugh...
